Dear Parents and Families:

 The 2013 Book Fair is almost here!  Our Scholastic Book Fair theme – Story Laboratory – Reading Gives you Super Power!  is part of an exciting reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read.  Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more.  Like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.

 This year we will be hosting an Online Book Fair that will open the week before the fair and continue for one week after the fair.  As always, we will have extended evening hours during our Family Night, and additional Saturday hours during our annual Charter Day School Spring Festival.  With all these options, every student is sure to have the opportunity to purchase a new book!

 In order to ensure that our Book Fair runs smoothly, we are asking for parent volunteers to help work the fair during the school day.  As a volunteer, you will be responsible for assisting parents and students in locating books, keeping the fair neat and clean and assisting the cashiers.  Volunteers are needed daily, and will be scheduled in two-hour time blocks.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Brooke Scacheri via email at jscacheri@ec.rr.com.

 A Book Fair connects students with books at affordable prices, and makes reading a positive experience.  We hope that this year’s fair will be just as successful as last year in providing us with the opportunity to purchase more books for our ever growing school library.

Headmaster Mark T. Cramer welcomes students and parents as they arrive for the start of the new school year at Charter Day School in Leland, NC.

 As students arrived for the much anticipated first day of classes at Charter Day School in Leland and Columbus Charter School in Whiteville, a few changes on campus greeted them: a record number of students, continuation of major new curriculum enhancements, and a new Headmaster at Charter Day School.

Monday, July 23 marked the beginning on the new academic year, and Charter Day School topped previous attendance records with 922 students on that first day. Its sister school, Columbus Charter School also opened with an attendance record of 722 students.

“The reason for the excitement and enthusiasm of our teaching staff are several-fold,” said Superintendent Mark T. Cramer. “Last year was a challenge as we instituted major new curriculum changes in grammar, writing, and literacy,” Cramer explained.

While both schools usually scored exceptionally well on all of the year-end state tests, Cramer said the Charter Day School Board of Trustees felt these subjects needed to have even more rigor.

“Rather than introduce one new change each year, we changed all three areas last year; and the training and teacher adaption was a monumental challenge,” said Superintendent Cramer. “But by the third quarter, things smoothed out and the advantages of the new curricula were evident to all – students and teachers alike,” he added

CDS Teacher Brianna Cox starts the new year working with kindergarten students on the new grammar curriculum.

“The new grammar curriculum is incredible with my children learning the parts of speech and correct sentence structure,” said Kindergarten teacher Brianna Cox.  She added that they can then begin writing with an understanding of the basic elements of style and correct grammar which are not traditionally taught that early.

The literacy elements also underwent a major revision last year with more advanced textual structure and instruction in reading comprehension strategies.

“Now that we have a year’s experience under our belts with these new programs, everyone is looking forward to a fun year of the children advancing their skills and showing what they are really capable of,” said Cary Andrews, Associate Superintendent for Reading and Literacy.

Superintendent Mark T. Cramer is returning to his role as headmaster as former Headmaster Jennifer Beamer moves back to her home state of Maryland. Mr. Cramer, a retired Marine Corp Major, was Charter Day School’s Headmaster from the school’s founding until 2008.

“The most important aspect of our schools is the students,” said Mr. Cramer as he helped kindergarteners find their rooms along Learning Lane. “And while I will continue my role as Superintendent of Schools, it gives me great pleasure to be back working on a day-to-day basis with the staff, teachers, and students at Charter Day School.”

Charter Day School and Columbus Charter School which are managed by The Roger Bacon Academy (RBA) are year-round schools where classes start earlier in the summer but have longer breaks throughout the year. Experience has shown that academic skill retention is higher with shorter summer breaks and a year-round schedule.

The Charter Day School Board of Trustees was recently recommended by the N.C. Charter School Advisory Council to be approved by the State Board of Education on their next charter school, Douglass Academy.  “Now that the charter school cap is lifted, we are continuing to expand and add new schools,” said Barbra Jones, Coordinator of Community Relations and New School Development.  “We are anticipating opening our downtown charter school for the 2013 school year and providing quality education to even more North Carolina students,” said Superintendent Cramer.

Thank you all for allowing us the opportunity and privilege of educating your children.  We understand the significance of this commitment and sincerely appreciate your decision.

As you know, Headmaster Jennifer Beamer is leaving us at the end of this month, and I will be taking over as the interim Headmaster.  Jennifer has done a wonderful job, and she will be greatly missed.  Please take the time over the next few weeks to thank  her for a job well done. Preliminary EOG scores indicate that, once again, your children turned in some of the highest scores of any school in the area.

Our board’s commitment to programs like Archery, Cheer, and others ensures that things won’t change just because there has been a change in leadership.  As always, it is our goal to provide you with the finest education possible as well as extracurricular activities that contribute to the making of a well-rounded individual with character development as the primary focus.

We are looking forward to a great 2012-2013 school year.  We are confronting the challenge of transitioning to the new “Common Core State Standards” mandated by the state, while we continue the successful implementation of the “Journeys” literacy program as well as the expansion of the rousing and popular Shurley grammar curriculum.

The RBA Archery team posted its highest score ever, 3,136, at the National Archery in School’s Program (NASP®) National Tournament this weekend in Louisville, KY. The North Carolina state championship team qualified to enter the NASP® World Tournament which takes place in Orlando, FL in the fall.

“A true team effort, everyone shot well and we couldn’t be more proud of our students,” said coach TJ Beamer. “These students deserve to be congratulated after working so hard this season.”

The team also got to meet USA Olympic hopefuls Joe Fanchin and Kristin Braun and got a picture with them! Who knows if future Olympians will come from Leland, NC!

LELAND, NC: April 28, 2012 – The Roger Bacon Academy’s Charter Day School hosted their annual Spring Festival and Open House last Saturday, April 28th, 2012. The event attracted over 600 people from the community and had a multitude of games and performances for all ages. The school’s nationally ranked cheerleaders performed their award-winning routines, and the world ranked archery team demonstrated their skill on the school’s archery range. “Ask me” booths provided parents and students with the opportunity to ask K-8 teachers questions and look at classrooms. A book fair supporting the school’s library and an art show highlighting student art work also ran in conjunction with the festival. Dunking booths, inflatable games, clowns, fire trucks, police cars and rescue vehicles rounded off a fun-filled day.
