LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Science teacher David Johnson is described as humble man. Roger Bacon Academy Middle School Assistant Head Master Geoff Gorski said, “He is a dependable, consistent and vital part of our staff here at charter day school.”
A former student nominated Mr. Johnson, saying he was an excellent teacher and a wonderful role model outside of the classroom as well. Mr. Johnson said that’s a goal he set for himself as an education student years ago.
“I said OK, when I become a teacher I want to create an environment where kids feel comfortable interacting with their teacher, if they’re comfortable they’re gonna’ learn.”
He empowers students by letting them “choose” their own grade. By giving them rubrics, they know exactly what’s expected of them and how to earn the grade they’re striving for. Johnson utilizes whole brain based lessons in the classroom and strives to get his students to use all five senses.
“My favorite part about the job is being able to prepare lessons and labs that not only excite my students but excite me,” he said.
Johnson even captivates Mr. Gorski, who often stops by to visit classrooms throughout the day. He always finds himself stuck in Mr. Johnson’s room.
“getting stuck with my hand,” Mr. Gorski said, “I’m ready to leave but not able to, because of something Mr. Johnson is saying.”
